Surprised in the Chilcotin
By Patty Laemoa
As I headed to the Chilcotin on my Summer Impact assignment, my mind was full of doubts. Armed with the mantra from orientation to “be flexible,” I prayed, “Lord, I only have a few weeks here. I need You to help me love these people.”
The Lord revealed His faithfulness to me this summer, answering that prayer and instilling in me a love for the Chilcotin people. Life moved quietly and peacefully, like a long conversation with a good friend. Out in “the bush,” I spent my time being with people, hearing about what they value in life.
Flexibility was important, especially because the Chilcotin way of doing things is different from my culture. InterAct church planters Steve and Jill Horsman taught me that time has less relevance there, and visitors are always welcome. I learned that sometimes the Lord brings people into our lives without notice and, as His servants, we must always be ready to do what He has prepared for us.
