All applications for membership are processed by the mobilization
department at the home office.
Step 1 (Applicant) Pray
about service with InterAct. Learn about us, read our
website, ask us questions, correspond, call us, etc. Seek
counsel from your home church leaders about your desire for
missionary service.
Step 2 (Applicant) Complete
a Preliminary
Information Form (written) or, if you prefer, do a 10-minute preliminary
phone interview with the mobilization coordinator. Call
(800) 258-3464, extension 115. This will help us determine
if a possible ministry match exists.
Step 3 (InterAct) If a possible ministry
match exists, we will send you an application packet along
with an expanded ministry position profile for the position(s)
you are interested in and a copy of the Members Handbook. (
For nearly all of InterAct’s positions, membership in
the organization is the gateway to employment or volunteer
ministry. Therefore, the application packet includes
(1) a Membership Application form and (2) an Employment or
Volunteer Ministry Application form.)
Step 4 (Applicant) Submit
completed application papers.
Step 5 (InterAct) We will first review
your application for membership. References will be
solicited, including a letter of recommendation from your
home church. If you meet the qualifications, you will
be granted provisional membership.
Step 6 (InterAct) Once you are a provisional
member, we will review your Employment or Volunteer Ministry
Application. Additional references will be sent out. Your
file is ready for final review when a sufficient number of
references have been returned.
Step 7 (InterAct) If everything is
satisfactory to this point, you will be invited to schedule
an interview at the home office.
Step 8 (Applicant) Visit
the home office in Boring, Oregon (rural suburb of Portland)
for an interview and, if applicable, a psychological assessment. Interview
times are scheduled in January and June. The interview
will include a personal interview (getting to know you) as
well as a written and oral Bible and theology knowledge assessment.
The psychological assessment is administered through a Christian
counseling center. (Details about the interview and
assessment are sent with your application papers.)
Step 9 (InterAct) If
everything is favorable through the interview, we will
extend to you an employment or volunteer ministry offer
and invite you to attend the next scheduled Vision and
Equipping Workshop (ViEW). ViEW
is held each March and August. This offer, and the
invitation to attend ViEW, may be conditional if there are
issues to be addressed based on the interviews. If
you are applying for a position that involves cross-cultural
ministry, you will be required to complete a medical review,
which consists primarily of a physician’s recommendation.
Step 10 (Applicant) Complete
the medical review (if applicable) and any other follow-up
steps mentioned in your offer. Following a review
of any additional information, we will inform you of
our decision regarding
your employment/volunteer ministry offer. We will either
send you a final offer of membership, or rescind the conditional
offer if a report is unsatisfactory. In most cases,
issues brought to light by the medical review or psychological
assessment may need to be resolved before you can leave for
your field assignment, or may have bearing on where you
are assigned. Generally speaking, they should
not cause your employment/volunteer ministry offer to be
rescinded.
Step 11 (Applicant) Sign and return
your final offer of employment. Employment will generally
not begin until a later date; which will all be explained
in ViEW.
Step 12 (Applicant) Attend
a six-day ViEW at the home office. The ViEW is a time of orientation
to InterAct’s policies and procedures as well as a
time of training in support-raising techniques, letter writing
and presentation skills, and many other aspects relevant
to support raising.
Step 13 (Appointee) Following
ViEW, applicants become “appointees.” They
are then permitted to begin to raise sufficient prayer
and financial support; complete any pre-field requirements
set by the mission (e.g., further training, debt reduction,
ministry experience, address an issue identified in the
assessment, etc.). During this time you will be assigned
to our Appointee Coach.
Step 14 (Most Long-Term Appointees) You
may be required to attend Ministry Development Program (MDP),
InterAct’s cross-cultural training school for those
ministering within a Native culture, held annually in Canada. If
so, it should be taken at the first available session after
acceptance, but no later than the first session offered after
you arrive on the field.
Step 15 Arrive on
the field!!! When
all conditions have been met and 100% of financial support
has been raised, you will be permitted to move to your
field assignment and begin your new ministry.
Note: The application process may be terminated, without
reason, at any time by the applicant or InterAct.
